25 DecA Garfield Christmas

In 1987, a special about Garfield spending Christmas at the Arbuckle farm aired. It started off with Garfield being disappointed and annoyed about not spending Christmas the way he dreamt it would be: Jon feeding him lasagna in an elf costume and a robotic Santa Claus giving him everything he wants. But things take a turn for the better when he meets Jon’s Grandma and the two bond. After Grandma talks about missing her husband, Garfield finds some old letters of theirs and he gives them to her on Christmas morning. This and a homemade backscratcher from Odie lets Garfield realize “It’s not the giving, it’s not the getting, it’s the loving!”

We all know and love Garfield for being sassy. We find humor in his relatable cynicism. This rare touching moment is a surprise, but a pleasant one. It reminds us all that there’s always something good about the world, and in people. If Garfield can see it, we should, too.

Happy holidays, everyone!
