Garfield, unlike typical cats, torments Herman Post, Jon Arbuckle’s mailman every chance he gets. This involves stealing all the mail, ripping off his pants and leaving him shredded and scratched. Herman Post dutifully attempts to find a way to safely deliver the mail, but rarely succeeds because Garfield enjoys torturing him. He is, apparently, the only mailman for Jon’s neighborhood, because no one else will put up with Garfield’s antics.

There have been rare times when Herman Post succeeds by outsmarting the cantankerous cat, such as delivering the mail safely by folding them into paper airplanes and throwing them at the house, wearing a suit of armor, or bringing in his big dog, Fido.
